Here is a preview of what our new project (w)Holy Media will be
like:
Ashley and I will discuss one topic per episode that will be released
about every other week. We will crack open a beer and tackle the
political, historical, and cultural implications of the theme we’ve
chosen. We purposefully define “religion” and “media” broadly in
order to explore the effects of faith (or lack thereof) in everything
from politics to pop culture.
When it comes to podcasts about religion, there seem to be two
camps: religious and academic. We don’t fall into either of these
camps. We are religion nerds—but the podcast isn’t
made for religion nerds. It is made for curious people who want to
explore aspects of cultural artifacts and events that are usually
ignored.
In the trailer we reference media missteps about Pope Francis
being called the former Holy Roman Emperor after receiving the
“Best Dressed” designation and a confounding take on
nondenominational prayer.
We also look at examples of religion in media that have been
making us happy: the song “How Great” from Chance the Rapper’s
new album, Coloring Book and the FOX television show “Lucifer.”
You can look forward to our first episode about religion and films
out July 5th, as well as future topics like comics, American
scripture, alcohol, political conventions, and more.
